Women teachers protest killing of colleague, seek protection
KHAR, Sept 3: Women teachers held a protest demonstration here on Friday against the brutal killing of their colleague by suspected militants in the congested Civil Colony and urged the government to provide them protection.
A group of over 70 female teachers for the first time in Bajaur tribal region came on the streets to lodge a protest against what they called the brutal murder of their colleague. The protesters chanted full throat slogans against the failure of the political administration and other law enforcement agencies to provide security to the female teachers.
They said that militant were targeting girl schools, teachers and students and the government was acting like a salient spectator. They said that it was the third attack on female teachers. They warned that if proper measures were not adopted for their protection, they would have no other option but stop going to school.
The presence of teachers and students remained thin in the schools on Friday. The teachers tried to hold a meeting with the political agent but he refused.
However, APA Khar Iqbal Khattak assured the teachers that proper arrangements will be made for their safety.
The tribal elders have also expressed concern over the growing incidents of attacks on female teachers and schools. They demanded of the government to ensure protection to the teaching community.
GHALANAI: Eight people were injured in a landmine blast and shelling by helicopter gunships in different areas of Mohmand tribal region on Friday.
A patrolling party of volunteers of Baizai peace committee was on routine patrol in Dag Qilla of Kodakhel when their vehicle hit a landmine. As a result four volunteers including Shah Wali, Abdul Haq, and Gohar sustained injuries.
The name of the fourth victim could not be ascertained. The injured were shifted to AHQ Hospital Ghalanai. However, Gohar was later referred to LHR Peshawar in critical condition.
Meanwhile, helicopter gunships pounded militant hideouts in Suran Dara, Walidad Kor, Wengar, Chamarkand, and Methi. A local identified as Gul Jan was inured in Methi area while three others were injured in Suran Dara.
It may be recalled that eight people have been killed in three landmine blasts during Ramazan. (Dawn)
